Alloy Wire International Ltd, as a world leader in the manufacture of precision cold drawn round wire, relies on the accuracy of Meltech Engineering's electrically heated furnace to deliver high quality, high performance Nickel, Cobalt and Titanium alloy wires.
Founded in 1946 as a manufacturer of small quantities of electrical resistance wire for the developing domestic and industrial electrical appliance industry, Alloy Wire International now produces primarily high performance nickel alloys used in spring manufacture, medical applications, chemical, petro-chemical and nuclear engineering and in the aerospace and automotive industries. The wire sizes range from 15mm diameter to as fine as 0.025mm and is supplied in coil,on spools or in straight cut lengths. The company holds ISO9001:2000 and Aerospace approvals and has in-house testing facilities for examination and certification of the wire properties.
Alloy Wire uses a Meltech MT-1300 strand annealing furnace for the bulk of its production, processing multiple wires simultaneously. The furnace is part of a self contained Meltech annealing line with integral spooling take-up machinery. Designed on the ‘low thermal mass’ principle, the furnace features multi-zone temperature control based on Kanthal APM heating element materials. Customisation of element design allows Alloy Wire to optimise the MT1300’s performance, using an advanced control technique to achieve accurate temperature zoning up to 1,300°C.
“We've used the MT-1300 furnace for about four years and found it to be trouble-free. The primary benefit it gives us is a more consistent and manageable heating across the length of the furnace, enabling us to improve the quality for all our wire products. One benefit we hadn't expected has been that recent increases in energy costs have had less impact than we'd expected thanks to the furnace's high thermal efficiency,” says Bill Graham, managing director, Alloy Wire International.
